The Toronto Zoo opened in 1974. Amongst its introductory menagerie was 2 year old Charles, a western lowland gorilla.
Charles grew into an iconic silverback, sired over ten offspring and became a grandfather to six!
In his spare time, Charles painted. A successful Artist, his painting sales helped fund the building of his family's home.
A gorilla of fine tastes, he would never turn down his favourites: grapes, peanut butter and herbal tea.
Many Zoo-goers grew up with Charles. Few make a trip to the Zoo without visiting him. He loved the attention.
On August 15th 2024, The Toronto Zoo turned 50!
The celebration included a grand tribute to Charles: a life-size bronze sculpture by Marina Guglielmi.
Charles' sculpture now acts to not only commemorate The Zoo's 50th, but also to celebrate the life of Charles.

Much appreciation to Nikki Jones for the awesome studio photos.
And of course, dearest Charles, thank you.
I am so grateful that we were able to meet.
Thank you all so much
